P.S. Cafe @ A.S.H. Park

a.s.h. park

Ann Siang Hill is yet another of those hilly places that has charmed me. With P.S. Cafe relatively new there and with a somewhat different feel and menu from the other outlets, I was compelled to pay it a visit. Where it stands used to be a dingy pub and I'm certainly welcoming the addition of P.S. Cafe.

A strict rule on adults and teenagers hold for the place and entering it brings you to another world altogether. Almost too quaint to be true. Remember Beng Hiang? The same transportation back in time.

canopy

If reservations were not made beforehand, you get shown to cosy seats to wait for one. Upstairs is where the revelry begins. Modelled after Hongkong's iconic cha chan teng, I felt most so with the grilles and mosiac-ed walls. Unlike the other outlets, the orchard theme was predominantly strong here with artificial canopys created from banana leaves. I nitpick at their tables being too closely arranged for comfort...with the working crowd trickling in, it was not long before the whole place was engaged in hearty chatter...so much so I could barely hear myself breathe...not even speak!

How about some Lychee Sangria to wash down midweek blues?
portebello mushroom soup

Portebello Mushroom Soup
Served with water cress and truffle oil

Opted for this despite the waitress' recommendation of soup of the day - potato amidst a whole lot of other ingredients which did not appeal. Portebello was ground to such fineness, there was nary a hint at its existence...this could pass off as cream of mushroom with a much earthier taste and shade. Truffle oil got lost in the swirl.

miso cod

Miso Cod ($35)
Broiled white miso cod fillet with dangaru eggplant, roasted pumpkin, daikon and caramelised ginger lemon and sesame dressed loon vegetable salad

The salad really resembled a well tossed yusheng and tasted so close to one. The flurry of vegetables that went into it was mind boggling. Quite an exquisite one to start with and moving onto cod was a different ball game altogether. It was quite like a mismatched outfit...the flavours could not gel. The cod had all the good things of a well executed fish. Perhaps they really do taste better separate than together.

truffle fries

Truffle Fries ($15)
With grated parmesan and parsley tossed in truffle oil

Humongous portion it arrived in and nearly every table spotted one. High hopes for this but it was disheartening. The truffle oil was limiting, just to the top layer of the pile of fries. The fries were a tad overcooked too. In such a situation, less is more.

sticky date pudding

Sticky Date Pudding ($12.90)

Dessert at P.S. has become such a routine, I feel. Walking out without dessert is hardly an option. At least 10 minutes wait is necessary for this. Vanilla bean icecream served on top a rich date pudding and thick sweetened date sauce. Only sugar tooth-ed need apply. I actually adored it..and that, is the only explanation for my sugar high thereafter.

Once again, presentation triumphs taste. P.S. Cafe..oh P.S. Cafe...
